Aquinas Catholic College Menai

The English classroom at Aquinas College is one where students are encouraged to become confident and engaging communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers and active learners. Gone are the chalk and blackboards of an earlier era and in their place are the tools of the contemporary classroom; six computer areas, Smart Boards, film and video access, Clickview, MyInternet with individual access through Myclasses, webquests and live performances both at school and at outside venues.

At the College, we take a whole-school approach to reading by beginning each morning with ten minutes of silent reading in the pastoral class. Students are encouraged to bring a book from home or to use this time to read one of their English novels. English homework is given at the junior level for twenty minutes, three to four times per week.

  • During Years 7 and 8 students will study:
  • Fiction (at least two works)
  • Poetry (a wide range of types of poems)
  • Film / Video / DVD (at least two works)
  • Nonfiction (at least two works)
  • Drama (at least two works)

In each of Years 7 and 8 they will study examples of:

  • Spoken texts
  • Print texts
  • Visual texts
  • Media and multimedia

Gifted English students in Stage 4 are catered for within the Challenge Class and in conjunction with the Gifted and Talented Program that is conducted through the College Learning Centre. At the Stage 5 level, gifted students are invited to participate in a selective English class that provides a challenging environment to further develop their skill and knowledge. All English units of work are differentiated to cater to different learning styles and abilities.

Aquinas College students have a healthy sense of competition and this is encouraged through participation in debating and public speaking competitions as well as numerous external English competitions. Debating classes are held after school hours, during the debating season and public speakers have individual teachers as mentors. In short, there is always something happening!
