Aquinas Catholic College Menai

The Gifted Education Program at Aquinas Catholic College focuses on a student centred approach to education and learning. In Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 gifted students are identified through a variety of assessment tools and then invited to take up a position in our Challenge class.

All students have the opportunity to excel academically through the College’s differentiated curriculum and assessment program where students learn at their own pace. Extension English classes challenge students in Year 10 and many students participate in our Accelerated Mathematics Program.

The following strategies are implemented to extend and challenge students:

  • Pre testing,
  • Compacting,
  • Tiered instruction,
  • Negotiated contracts,
  • Mentoring,
  • Independent studies / research projects,
  • Small group work,
  • Negotiated curriculum.

The Resource Centre also provides an environment where extension and enrichment programs can be studied.

Programs include:

  • Writing Workshops
  • Challenge Days
  • Night of the Notables
  • Independent Learning Projects
  • Online investigations such as Murder Under the Microscope, Futures Problem Solving
  • Competitions such as The Science IQ Quiz, Dorothea MacKellar Poetry Awards and Aurecon Bridge Building Challenge
  • Crystal Growing
  • The “90’s Club” – a new initiative for those senior students working towards an ATAR above 90
